About Jig Saws

New Lanka Tools stocks 9 jig saws. A jig saw is the tool for curves, cut-outs and shapes — anything a straight-cutting saw cannot follow. Change the blade and the same machine handles timber, board, plastic, thin steel and aluminium. Bosch is the most represented brand with 3 machines, followed by Makita with 2, plus Dong Cheng and GrLINK. Models range from compact machines for light board work to variable-speed saws with orbital action for faster cutting in thicker timber. Carpenters and joiners, kitchen and worktop fitters, shopfitters, sign makers, plumbers and electricians cutting service openings, and hobbyist woodworkers all use jig saws. It is also one of the safer power saws for an occasional user, which makes it a sensible first saw for a home workshop. Applications include cutting sink and hob openings in worktops, cutting curves and profiles in timber and board, cutting access holes for pipes, ducts and sockets, trimming laminate and plywood, scroll and pattern cutting, and light metal cutting with a fine bi-metal blade. Blade choice is everything with a jig saw. Coarse wood blades cut fast but splinter the top face — turn the workpiece over, use a down-cut blade, or run masking tape along the line if the visible face matters. Fine metal blades need slow speed and steady pressure; run them too fast and they blunt in seconds. Orbital action speeds up cutting in timber but should be switched off for metal and for tight curves. Let the blade do the work rather than forcing the saw sideways through a curve — that is what snaps blades and produces bevelled edges on what should be a square cut. Blades are consumables and available on enquiry. For long straight cuts a circular saw is faster and cleaner, and for plunge cutting into a finished surface see our Multi-Tools category.
