About Magnetic Drills

New Lanka Tools stocks 2 magnetic drills, from DiTEC and Dewalt, including a 1200W magnetic drill press. A mag drill clamps itself to steel with an electromagnet and then drills under controlled feed — it brings the accuracy of a drill press to work that cannot be moved to a bench. Structural steel fabricators and erectors, shipyard and marine engineers, bridge and tank contractors, plant maintenance teams, and heavy fabrication shops use magnetic drills. Anyone drilling holes in an installed steel beam, column or plate has no realistic alternative. Applications include drilling bolt holes in structural steel beams and columns on site, drilling plate and heavy section in position, drilling holes for connections and brackets during erection, drilling tanks, vessels and pipework, and any situation where the workpiece is fixed and the machine must come to it. The magnet is the safety-critical element. It holds only on ferrous material of sufficient thickness, and it holds far less well on a painted, curved, rusty or uneven surface. Always fit the safety chain or strap so the machine cannot fall if the magnet releases or power is lost, and never rely on the magnet alone when drilling overhead or vertically. Annular cutters rather than twist drills are what make these machines efficient. An annular cutter removes only the ring of material around the hole instead of converting the whole disc into swarf, so it cuts much faster with far less power and leaves a clean slug. Use cutting fluid — most machines have a coolant reservoir feeding the cutter — because running dry destroys cutters quickly and work-hardens the steel. Match cutter diameter and depth of cut to the machine's rated capacity rather than pushing beyond it. Annular cutters, pilot pins and coolant are consumables available on enquiry.
