A polisher runs at lower speed and higher torque than a grinder, which is exactly what a polishing pad needs — enough rotation to work the compound, slow enough not to burn the surface. Dong Cheng, Dewalt, GrLINK and Bosch are each represented, including sander-polisher machines that handle both preparation and finishing. Vehicle body shops and detailing businesses, marine and boat finishers, stone and terrazzo contractors, metal finishers, and furniture restorers use polishers. In vehicle work in particular, a polisher is what removes swirl marks and oxidation that no amount of hand work will shift. Applications include cutting and polishing automotive paint, removing oxidation and light scratches, finishing gelcoat on boats, polishing marble, granite and terrazzo surfaces, buffing metal to a bright finish, and applying and removing wax and sealant. Speed control is the feature to insist on. Compounds are formulated to work within a speed range — too slow and the compound never breaks down, too fast and heat builds until the paint or gelcoat burns. Variable speed lets you cut aggressively then finish gently with the same machine. Pad selection carries as much weight as the machine. A wool or firm foam cutting pad removes defects; a soft finishing pad refines the result. Keep pads clean, and never let a dry pad run on a surface. On vehicle paint, work in small sections and keep the machine moving — holding it in one spot on a panel edge is the fastest way to burn through.
