About Routers

New Lanka Tools stocks 6 wood routers and trimmers. A router is the shaping tool of the woodworking trade — it cuts grooves, rebates, profiles and joints that no saw can produce, and with a template it repeats them exactly. Dong Cheng and GAOCHENG lead with 2 machines each, alongside GrLINK and Bosch. The range covers full-size routers for grooving and joinery work and compact trimmers for edge work, laminate trimming and light profiling. Joiners and cabinet makers, kitchen and wardrobe fitters, shopfitters, furniture makers, and anyone working with laminate or veneered board uses routers. A trimmer in particular is the tool that makes worktop and laminate edges look professionally finished rather than merely cut. Applications include cutting grooves, housings and rebates for shelving and carcass work, rounding over and chamfering edges, cutting decorative mouldings and profiles, trimming laminate and veneer flush to an edge, cutting hinge and lock recesses in doors, template routing repeated shapes, and cutting joints such as dados and rebates. Router technique rewards patience. Take shallow passes rather than trying to cut full depth in one go — it gives a cleaner finish, reduces burning and puts far less strain on both the cutter and the motor. Feed against the cutter rotation so the bit pulls into the work rather than running away along the edge, and always let the motor reach full speed before entering the timber. Cutters are the real investment here. A carbide-tipped bit costs more than a plain steel one and lasts many times longer, especially in board materials, which are abrasive and blunt cheap cutters quickly. Match the shank size to your machine's collet. Eye protection and dust extraction matter — routing produces a lot of fine chips at speed. See our Safety Equipment department.
