Pick the type by the job. A belt sander removes material fast and will happily dig a hollow in a panel if left in one place — it is a stock removal tool, not a finishing tool. A random orbit sander is the best all-rounder, leaving no visible scratch pattern, which matters on anything that will be stained or clear-finished. A sheet or detail sander gets into corners and along edges where a round pad cannot. Work through the grits rather than jumping straight to fine — skipping grades leaves scratches that only appear once the finish goes on.
